George Furtney Memorial Forest View Map of Fanshawe Conservation Area
Sunday, September 26, 2010 a 2:00 pm
The George Furtney Memorial Forest program for the London area is a way to honour the memory of a loved one - a living memorial. Each tree in this natural forest will be in memory of one who has lived. The Memorial Forest has been established in recognition of the severe depletion of our forests, and pays a lasting tribute to a loved one, as well as ensure a better environment for generations to come. Trees play a vital role in combating the greenhouse effect as a result of the destruction of the earths ozone layer. They provide shelter for wildlife, control soil erosion, provide wind protection, shade and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Every improvement we can make to the environment is valuable and will be measurable in the future. The program is not restricted to those served by the Logan Funeral Home or the Evans Funeral Home; everyone is invited to participate. The
George Furtney Memorial Tree Program was established during London's
Arbor Week, April 24, 1992. The initial plantings took place north of
Watson Porter Pavilion in Fanshawe Park. A dedication service is held
annually at the Pavilion each September. A living memorial may be arranged through either the Logan Funeral Home or the Evans Funeral Home. The Family of the deceased will receive an "In Memoriam Card" notifying them that a memorial tree will be planted in the George Furtney Memorial Forest in memory of their loved one. The UTRCA supervise and control all plantings and ground preparation work. The name of the deceased will be engraved on the Memorial Forest Wall located at the Logan Funeral Home and Evans Funeral Home, plus in the listing which is included in the dedication service brochure. The current cost to have a tree planted is $50.00. Cheques must be made payable to the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority. Payment along with the name of the individual for whom the tree is being planted in memory of and the name of the individual who is to receive the "In Memoriam Card" are to be forwarded to either the Logan Funeral Home or the Evans Funeral Home. An income tax receipt will be issued by the UTRCA A tree will automatically be planted for each individual whose funeral arrangements have been conducted through either Logan Funeral Home or Evans Funeral Home. A living memorial in appreciation of the confidence and trust placed in our firm by the families we serve. There is a plaque at each site indicating the memorial forest. The George Furtney Funeral Home Memorial Forest Program will continue for many years and it is our hope that the healing qualities of a natural forest and its wildlife will bring comfort and consolation to all.
